Shopping for Yoga Pants – Picking the Right Type

Spread the love

I love shopping for yoga pants, I really do. But as a beginner, I struggled. There are different styles of yoga pants for different exercises, so it can get all very confusing! After experiencing some embarrassment and as well as discomfort during some yoga classes, I can say that I now know how to go shopping for yoga pants 🙂 Whether you would like to practice hot yoga or restorative yoga, I can advise you below so you can save time & money.

High Waist Yoga Leggings

High Waist Yoga Leggings

If it’s your first time shopping for yoga pants, and you can only buy one kind, these would be it. The material for these types of yoga leggings are made to be super flexible, so that you can easily move into any position during your yoga session. Not only can you practice any type of yoga in these, you can also wear them for a variety of exercises, including high intensity workouts. And don’t worry, you can sweat all you want…these type of yoga leggings use materials that absorb our sweat, and it dries quickly. You don’t need to panic about getting any chafing!

They keep your tummy in, and it helps to keep our shape…specially around our booties! But at the same time, it shouldn’t feel tight, and should feel light. High waist yoga leggings are great for casual wear, as you can wear a tank top, crop top, or big t-shirt, and you will feel confident to go out in them.

When shopping for any yoga pants, make sure you read the reviews or physically check regarding if it’s see-through or not, that’s the last thing we would want to find out after buying!

Harem Yoga Pants

Harem Yoga Pants

A.K.A. Aladdin’s pants – where you can be comfortable while flying on a magical carpet. All jokes aside, these types of pants are super stylish & comfortable at the same time. They are awesome for moving in different yoga poses with ease, and not only are they great for yoga, you can also use them for dancing. Whether you are lifting your legs up high during a dance move or doing a handstand, harem yoga pants are fitted at your ankles, which means the pants don’t slide down.

Harem Yoga Pants are specially popular for Kundalini Yoga – in fact, have you ever noticed that people wear white to Kundalini Yoga Class? This is because the founder of Kundalini Yoga, Yogi Bhajan, believed that the color white has a positive impact on our conscience. The color white also expands our aura to be bigger. But keep in mind when shopping for yoga pants, that there are many styles & colors for everyone’s tastes and needs. You should wear whatever you feel most comfortable with 🙂

Throw on a pair of sneakers with a crop top and a stylish pair of harem yoga pants, and then you can chill out with your friends or just have a relaxing day at home. I would definitely not recommend wearing these pants with heels. Also, these pants are NOT a great fit for hot yoga classes, running/treadmill, and cycling.

Flared Yoga Pants

Flared Yoga Pants (A.K.A Bootcut Yoga Pants)

These types of pants used to be super popular in the 90s and now they have sprung back into popularity again. Flared yoga pants are so versatile that you can even put on a pair of heels plus a professional shirt and wear these pants to work (they probably need to be black though!). They are so comfortable and stretchy that you can wear them at anytime for whatever reason. Women also love to wear them, because no matter your body type, it will look great on you…this kind of pants are amazing at shaping our curves!

Bootcut yoga pants are designed for medium-density exercises, such as regular yoga and pilates, or even if you want to relax and meditate. I would definitely not recommend these kinds of pants for hot yoga, as this is not the best type of pants to be sweating your tushy in! Also, stair stepper, running, or any high intensity exercise is not recommended when you are wearing these types of pants.

Yoga Shorts

Yoga Shorts

Although we are mainly talking about yoga pants here, we cannot leave out our beloved yoga shorts. They are perfect for maximizing your movements, so you can wear them for a variety of exercises. Yoga shorts also look good with anything casual, such as t-shirts, tank tops, and sporty shoes. However, you might want to stay away from any loose shorts, as they can roll up during some poses done during yoga.

Bikram yoga, or hot yoga, is yoga that is done in a heated room at 105 °F/41 °C, so it would be the best choice to wear yoga shorts as you will be sweating a lot. And of course, also perfect to wear during summer!

Factors to Consider When Buying Yoga Pants

When shopping for yoga pants, it’s super important to consider the style that you’re going to buy, basing it on what you are planning to use it for. But also there are other factors that you need to keep in mind, such as:

  • Quality of the material used – are you really going to save money by buying a $15 dollar pair of yoga in the long term? Sometimes it’s better to invest in something that will last longer
  • Is it eco friendly? Yoga is a way of life – where we raise our awareness. We should become more aware regarding where our clothes are coming from and our daily habits
  • Buying the right size – the worst thing is practicing yoga when your pants are super uncomfortable and tight, or falling down
  • Are they see-through? Trust me…the worst part is when someone else is telling you that they can see…everything

Your yoga pants should be breathable, flexible, and comfortable. This will ensure you have peace of mind while practicing yoga, other sports, or even just wearing it on a daily basis.

    Hi there,

thank you for quite a comprehensive guide on the types of yoga pants out there. I guess when stretching the body in a way that yoga and pilates do you want to be comfortable in the first place. Would you recommend pants made out of natural materials such as cotton or something mixed with lycra, for example?

Hi, and thanks for stopping by! regarding the materials, it will depend on what kind of yoga practice you are doing. If you are doing Bikram yoga (hot yoga), then I would definitely not recommend cotton alone, because when you sweat, it will just feel wet and sticky. Most yoga pants will be made out of a combination of lycra, spandex, nylon, polyester, wool. You can read my post on more eco-friendly materials that are used to make yoga pants here:
