As you may have already known, nylon does not do any good for our environment. The good news is that any nylon that has already been manufactured and thrown away in our environment, can be recycled. Organic Basics is one of the brands that offer leggings that are made out of recycled nylon, along with other type of eco friendly materials for their other pieces of clothing. Check out below my Organic Basics review for their recycled nylon active leggings and how their brand contributes to our planet

About Organic Basics
Organic Basics solely focuses on providing clothing that are using eco friendly fabric and as well as having partnerships with factories that are sustainable. The factories that they are partnered with are located in Portugal, Italy, Scotland, Austria, and Turkey. They ensure that these factories are certified and ethical – such as NO child labor, NO forced labor, and YES to fair wages and employee benefits. Their work space is based in Copenhagen, Denmark, where they also try to be as sustainable as possible by using second hand furniture, eating vegetarian & vegan food, and eliminating plastic. One thing that really sets them apart from other brands is their commitment to transparency. They are so transparent that they provide their 2019 Impact Report, where they state their accomplishments for the year, new sustainable fabric that has been added to their clothing line, how much they have saved (in terms of water, greenhouse gases emissions, and fabric waste), and how much they have donated to communities that were in need.
For customers to have an idea regarding the difference that it makes between using virgin nylon and recycled nylon, they have created an “Impact Index” where it shows the environmental impact on the page of each of their clothing. The SilverTech active leggings which is mostly made out of recycled nylon compared to a legging that is mostly made out of virgin nylon saves:
- 5.3 kg of CO2 emissions from being released
- 220 liters of water from being wasted
- 42 grams of waste from being throw away
Just knowing that you have purchased a legging that makes a quite a big difference to the environment makes you feel better, doesn’t it?
How Else Do They Help The Environment?
As mentioned above, Organic Basics ensure that their factories are certified, so their factories carries the following certifications (kindly note that each factory carries the same or a different type of certification):
- GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard)
- OCS (Organic Content Standard)
- GRS (Global Recycle Standard)
- Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX
- ISO 9001 & 14001 (International Organization for Standardization)
- SA8000 (Social Accountability Accreditation Services)
- OHSAS18001 (International Standards for Occupational Health and Safety)
- EU Eco Label
- Higg Index Partner
- BCI (Better Cotton Initiative)
- FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)
- PEFC (Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification)
- Bluesign (Solutions and services for sustainable textile)
- SEDEX (Ethical trade service providers)
- Ethical Trade Initiative
- RWS (Responsible Wool Standard)
- The Detox Project
- SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit) – In progress in getting this certificate
As you can see, that’s a lot of certifications to ensure that there are proper standards, traceability, and sustainability from the beginning of the process (like growing cotton) until it reaches their customers.
On top of that, they are also collaborating with other companies, such as Chooose, in order to offset their carbon footprint by helping developing countries to reduce their carbon footprint. Every time that you buy from Organic Basics, a part of the funding goes towards the Koru Wind Farm in Cannakale, Turkey. Organic Basics have also created “The Organic Basics Fund”, where twice a year they donate some of their profit to individuals and organizations who are passionate and fighting for our environment.
We can feel more comfortable knowing that they really do a lot to offset their carbon footprint, but are their leggings any good? Let’s check out below the Organic Basics review for their active leggings.
Organic Basics SilverTech Active Leggings Review
Colors Available: Black, Burgundy, Sea Blue
Available Sizes: XS – S | S – M | M – L | L – XL
My Rating: 9/10
These leggings are full length and made out of 96% recycled nylon (comes from Mantua, Italy), and 4% elastane. They are great for any of your exercise routines, be it yoga, high intensity workouts, or walking. Check out their features below:
- These leggings are treated with Polygiene®, which is recycled silver salt, in order to avoid those funky smelling bacteria that could have show up when you sweat in these leggings. By the way, Polygiene® is not bad for the environment or for humans.
- These leggings are seamless – which make them more comfortable and durable
- Sweat-wicking & breathable– due to the small amount of elastane used, and as well as due to the treatment with recycled silver salt
Not Only Are They Eco Friendly, But Also Comfortable
Despite it being pricey, they are super durable, comfortable and soft. They are squat proof, and they won’t roll down when you are practicing yoga.
Even for shorter people like me (5″2), the leggings are not too long and they stop right at the ankle. However, do watch out if you are very tall, then these leggings may be a little shorter for you depending on the size. It’s best to contact their customer service to make sure regarding your height. These leggings are popular for its versatility, as you are able to do pretty much anything in them. Although the SilverTech Active leggings may be too warm for a very hot summer or hot yoga, they are perfect for any of the other seasons.
Do keep in mind that recycled nylon and elastane still release micro plastics into the environment when washing in the laundry machine. You can either check out here some solutions for filtering out the microfibers that are released in the environment, or you can directly buy a Guppy Friend washing bag from their website. On the other side, it is awesome that we do not need to wash these leggings as often due to the polygiene® technology that they use. Another sustainability advantage is that when they ship their clothing, the packaging is non-plastic, as they have recently changed it in 2019 to recycled paper packaging.
Say Yes To Recycled Nylon, and Say No to Virgin Nylon
Although virgin nylon does not have a good reputation due to the pollution it creates during the manufacturing process, and also due to the fact that it is not biodegradable, recycled nylon is a perfect solution to avoid polluting our environment as it can be recycled over and over again. Organic Basics really focus on being a completely sustainable brand, and every year they try to find better ways to improve their carbon footprint. If you are looking for eco friendly leggings that are comfortable and durable for your exercise regimen, you should definitely add their SilverTech™ Active Leggings to your wardrobe!
